The Administrative Checklist for Minnesota Seniors Who Are Moving

The physical move is only half the work. For Minnesota seniors relocating — whether across Wright County, across the metro, or across the state — there is a significant administrative layer that must be completed to ensure continuity of mail, benefits, healthcare, and legal records. Miss one item and the consequences can range from inconvenient to serious.

This checklist covers every administrative change that needs to happen when a Minnesota senior moves, organized by urgency.

Do These First (Before or On Move Day)

USPS Mail Forwarding

File a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service at usps.com or at your local post office. Mail forwarding takes effect within 3-5 business days and lasts for 12 months. This catches any mail that slips through before individual address updates are complete. Cost: $1.10 for identity verification online.

Utilities at Both Addresses

  • Schedule utility disconnection at the old address for the day after final move-out
  • Confirm utility activation at the new address 48-72 hours before move-in (heating is critical in Minnesota)
  • Transfer or establish: electricity, gas/heating, water (if not included), internet, phone, and cable if applicable

Homeowners or Renters Insurance

Update your insurance policy the day of or before the move. You need coverage at the new address from day one. If moving from owned to rented, transition from homeowners to renters insurance.

Complete Within the First Week

Social Security Administration

Update your address with SSA online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at your local SSA office. This ensures Social Security deposits continue uninterrupted and that important communications reach you.

Medicare

Update your address with Medicare at medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). If you are moving outside your current Medicare Advantage plan service area, you may need to change plans — contact your plan to confirm coverage in your new location.

Banking and Financial Accounts

  • Update your address with all banks and credit unions
  • Update investment accounts, brokerage accounts, and retirement accounts (IRA, 401k)
  • Confirm automatic deposit and payment accounts have the new address
  • Order new checks with the new address if applicable

Medical Providers

  • Update your address with your primary care physician, specialists, dentist, optometrist, and pharmacist
  • Request medical records transfer if changing providers
  • Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy near your new home
  • Update your health insurance provider with the new address

Complete Within the First Two Weeks

Minnesota DMV (Driver License and Vehicle Registration)

Minnesota requires address updates on driver licenses and vehicle registrations within 30 days of moving. Update online at dps.mn.gov or at a Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) office. Cost: $11 for a new license with updated address.

Voter Registration

Update your Minnesota voter registration at mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us or at your county elections office. Minnesota allows same-day registration at polling places, but updating your registration in advance ensures a smoother voting experience.

Veterans Benefits (if applicable)

Update your address with the VA at va.gov or by contacting your local VA regional office. Ensure your VA healthcare is accessible from your new location. If moving outside your current VAMC catchment area, request a facility transfer.

Complete Within the First Month

Insurance Policies

  • Life insurance: update address with all policy providers
  • Long-term care insurance: update address and confirm coverage terms are unchanged
  • Supplemental Medicare insurance (Medigap): update address
  • Auto insurance: update address (rates may change based on new location)

Subscriptions and Memberships

  • Magazine and newspaper subscriptions
  • Amazon, Chewy, and other delivery accounts
  • Loyalty programs and reward accounts
  • Professional organizations or associations
  • Church, synagogue, mosque, or other religious community membership

Estate Documents

Review your will, healthcare directive, power of attorney, and trust documents to ensure they reflect your current address and remain current with Minnesota law. This is a good time to review them regardless of whether changes are needed.
